I love the beat in the song "I Shot the Sheriff" by Warren G (EPMD remix). I heard this same beat from an older song but I can't remember. Do you know what song the beat came from?

  • I didn't downvote, but maybe it was for lack of research... have a look at whosampled for all the samples used in that song. – Bebs Jun 23 '20 at 13:23

The older song with the Reggae beat is the Eric Clapton's 1974 cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRgcwT9X2J8

  • I downvoted this answer, but I would change that to an upvote if someone edits the answer so I can do that. Clapton's cover of I Shot the Sheriff does appear to be the source of the samples on Warren G's track. But to give credit where it is due, the song was written by Bob Marley and first released by him and the Wailers. – phoog Jun 21 '20 at 0:51

@phoog, the question was not to identify the original writer of the song, but the song where the beat (I think it meant sample) come from. – Bebs Jun 22 '20 at 11:54
  • @Bebs sure, but it's still good to identify the composer. Regardless, I would like to reverse my overhasty downvote, but I can't do it until the answer is edited. – phoog Jun 22 '20 at 19:20
