As someone who usually hates the general concept of 'pop' music, I find Lukas Graham's 2015 hit '7 Years' to be an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. It is brief, melodic and catchy, but at the same time it feels so different to most modern pop music. It aims not to venerate the celebrity life, but rather to bring fame down to Earth for those "still seeking glory". It's a song about the real world, the one that we all experience. Not about picking up supermodels in our overpriced sports cars or fulfilling childish romantic fantasies, just about growing up and considering the future.

Can '7 Years' by Lukas Graham be characterized further in terms of genre than simply 'pop'?

"7 years" puts me in mind of songs like "American Pie" (Don McLean) and "Cat's in the Cradle" (Harry Chapin). More broadly, I think of Bob Dylan. I can imagine Elton John performing this. It sounds to me like the way those singer-songwriters might have sounded had they emerged in the 90s or 2000s, and especially if they had brought some of the musical style and lyrical pacing from Hip-Hop into Folk/Folk-Rock.

Folk-Pop?
