I am trying to find out popularity of music genres. This page provides the popularity of music genre, but its little old, can anyone share the ranking of genres based on popularity?

Read Billboard Magazine. This industry trade publication has been studying, tabulating and reporting on this since the 1930s. billboard.com – user546 Aug 9 '15 at 1:47
  • Bluesy Jazz, or Jazz Blues. Research "Naughty Jack". – Jason P Sallinger Aug 17 '15 at 18:06

This site shows album sales broken down into genres in America.

Is this of any use?

It is something close to what you already have, but shows it up to 2014 (from 2008).

Album sales don't nessesary correlate to popularity, especially physical album sales numbers. One genre could have more albums sold, but be less popular when everything is counted. – Jacob Swanson Aug 7 '15 at 22:39
  • @jacobSwanson You make a fair point, if you think about back catalogue sales, or people buying albums they have lost or had on different formats etc., but I think, generally, album sales will give a reasonable indication of genre popularity. – o.fithcheallaigh Aug 8 '15 at 7:10
  • Thanks!. Its enough :) but is there any best way to identify the music genre, or any type people like to listen now a days? – Nithi2023 Aug 8 '15 at 8:59
  • FYI, I am trying to develop a mobile application (I know already tonnes of services there, I am just trying), where people can listen to songs they like the most. someone said, generally people used to listen to Top 40 Hits. but, is there any chart / report about popular music ? – Nithi2023 Aug 8 '15 at 9:04
  • @Nithi2023, you might want to take a look at Billboard.com's charts. While they don't give an accurate genre breakdown, they do have popular songs of the week. billboard.com/charts/hot-100 – Jacob Swanson Aug 8 '15 at 17:53
