That's the principle theme of the fourth movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No.9 in D minor, Opus 125, composed 1822-1824 and first performed in Vienna on 7 May 1824. One of the best-known works in common practice music, it is regarded by many critics and musicologists as one of Beethoven's greatest works and one of the supreme achievements in the history of western music. The fourth movement is written for four vocal soloists and choir, and is Beethoven's musical representation of universal brotherhood based on this theme known as the 'Ode to Joy' and using the text of Friedrich Schiller's poem "Ode to Joy".
